Michelle Taransky is the author of Barn Burned, Then, selected by Marjorie Welish for the 2008 Omnidawn Poetry Prize. Before moving to Philadelphia to work at Kelly Writers House, Taransky received a BA from The University of Chicago, worked as Programs Coordinator at The Poetry Center of Chicago, earned her MFA from The Iowa Writers' Workshop, taught poetry at the Iowa Young Writers Studio, and was a resident at Wave Books' Poetry Farm. She is a member of the Critical Writing Faculty at Penn and an adjunct poetry instructor at Temple University. Timothy Donnelly has this to say about the DB-Q's long poem: "Beachy-Quick lets his figure of the hero, driven by the desire to possess and to master, commit one blunder after another. The poem implies that the path the hero is on may very well be one of maturing from a person who “never stops / Asking for an answer” into one who knows “There is a way to think that asks no questions / But divides every question in two,” but we never quite witness that evolution take place. We do, however, witness the hero tire and even grow frightened of gazing upon the world and finding only himself again. The poem doesn’t tell us what happens next—in part, presumably, for dramatic effect, but also because its author knows better than to imply that the changes yet to take place in the hero’s mind are all that easy to make. Moreover, we end without knowing what happens next because being at home with unknowing is, one hopes, our hero’s destination.

Flying Object is a recently opened (soon-to-be non-profit) bookstore, gallery & letterpress in the Amherst/Northampton area of Western MA. Flying Object has intentions of being a sort-of physically located presspresspress in that we stock a great selection of chapbooks and small-press titles in the bookstore.

In fact, that's our focus. You.

Which is why we're here making a little announcement of our existence as well as a call to all the presses represented here and beyond that we'd like to stock your books. Consignment or donations as we get started would be incredibly helpful in allowing us to build a collection of all the best presspresspresses producing work today. If neither of those options is possible, don't hesitate to email us at flying.object.shop@gmail.com to talk about what might be.

The space is event driven. And we try to keep our events fresh. Talk to anyone who's been to one - it's a pretty magical space - designed for and by people who love chapbooks and independent publishing. We've featured over 40 readers in our first three months. The formal structure of Wondrous Things I Have Seen is derived from the ancient and medieval Arabic form called saj’. The saj’ is decorative prose which rhymes, and which often makes use of rhythms more common in verse. The prophet Muhammad said, "Avoid ye the rhyming prose of the soothsayers or diviners."

My sex left me at the confluence of two rivers, assuming the rising flood would do its job of killing. The flood bubbled around my lungs and made all my blood soggy but I was lucky—a wolf came over and put teats in my mouth and I sucked. Scary wolf, so brazen and shameless to force open my mouth and make bite on teats my teeth. Bashless wolf, do you not know that hunters lurk near these rivers, who hanker for jackets of wolfskin? The spot where the floodwaters ebbed was part of two ranches owned by Ronald Reagan, collectively known as Ronald Reagan Ranch. A ranch hand found me coddled by wolves, let wolves live, clasped by the rear he reared me on the ranch, extending the borders of his working day so it knew no bounds. Fortunate rancher, he did not know I would be the king of anatomically-camel ranch hands, endorsed by Vulcan to stamp forehead by lightning at my discretion. My crown tasted like a coin or teat. So first thing I did was hunt, trap, beat, exterminate wolves.

"This poem comes from a manuscript of serial poems exploring what it means to be influenced by an artist. They are ekphrastic in the basic sense that they respond to artists or works of art. Beyond that they attempt to understand, via the lyric, how the art that matters to us continues to be present long after we’ve stopped thinking about the color, form & content of an individual work. This poem is a response to Caravaggio’s The Calling of St. Matthew, a painting that I have never been able to get out of my head."

Deirdre Dore’s poetry and plays have been published and/or produced in journals and on stages in the USA & Canada. Originally from New York, she now lives with her husband alongside a river in British Columbia where she catches horses, pursues an MFA in Creative Writing and works with trees.

Jacqueline Lyons is the author of the poetry collection The Way They Say Yes Here (Hanging Loose Press, 2004). Her poetry and essays have appeared in many literary journals as well as the poetry anthology Oh One Arrow (Flim Forum Press, 2007). She has received a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship, the Peace Corps Writers Best Poetry Book Award, the Indiana Review Poetry Prize, and a Nevada Arts Council Fellowship. Her nonfiction has been nominated for Pushcart Prizes and cited in Best American Essays. She is a certified instructor of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and teaches creative writing at Washington State University.

Author of How To Study Birds, a chapbook collection in its second run from Dancing Girl Press, Sarah Gardner is a poet and teacher whose work has appeared in many distinguished journals. She has received fellowships for her writing from Blue Mountain Center as well as the Vermont Studio Center. Her recognitions include an International Merit Award from The Atlanta Review and second place honors from the Juniper Creek poetry contest. She has been proudly affiliated with Houston’s Writers in the Schools, a program the brings creative writing instruction to at-risk youth. Currently she lives in Iowa and teaches for St. Ambrose University. Sarah holds an MFA from Syracuse.

Jen Blair spends a lot of time personifying vegetation in writing and photography. She also makes books and pamphlets, and writes essays and poems about her social concerns.
