Flying Object: Center for Independent Publishing, Art, & Design

Flying Object is a recently opened (soon-to-be non-profit) bookstore, gallery & letterpress in the Amherst/Northampton area of Western MA. Flying Object has intentions of being a sort-of physically located presspresspress in that we stock a great selection of chapbooks and small-press titles in the bookstore.

In fact, that's our focus. You.

Which is why we're here making a little announcement of our existence as well as a call to all the presses represented here and beyond that we'd like to stock your books. Consignment or donations as we get started would be incredibly helpful in allowing us to build a collection of all the best presspresspresses producing work today. If neither of those options is possible, don't hesitate to email us at to talk about what might be.

The space is event driven. And we try to keep our events fresh. Talk to anyone who's been to one - it's a pretty magical space - designed for and by people who love chapbooks and independent publishing. We've featured over 40 readers in our first three months. Letterpress workshops, music, a film series, micro-residencies and much more are planned for the upcoming months. Maybe your press can make a stop here?

We have a letterpress studio shared by Pilot Books, Factory Hollow Press, minutes BOOKS, and Pocket Myths, as well as a gallery that exhibits painters, printers, and publishers alike. In December we showcased the dozens of beautiful books published by Ugly Duckling Presse. In November rare mimeographs and works published by Bernadette Mayer, Clark Coolidge, Larry Fagin, and others. In October, beautiful paintings by the artist Susan Metrican.

If you're interested, let us know how you'd like to get involved. We'd love to have you.

Liking us on Facebook is totally a good start.
